In Short

Germany hosts 687+ AI startups with 35% year-on-year growth, while Berlin alone concentrated 209 AI startups that raised $3.42B in 2024 (65% growth). Austria operates 44 AI companies, with Vienna accounting for 65% of the national total and €204M collectively raised. Switzerland's AI sector raised CHF 345M in 2024, representing a 134% increase. Notable unicorn-track companies include DeepL (planning late 2025 IPO following $300M Series B at $2B valuation), Helsing (€3.4B valuation with €450M Series C plus €600M Series D), and Aleph Alpha (~€500M valuation). The EU AI Act entered force in August 2024 with full applicability beginning August 2026.

German AI Landscape

Germany's AI startup ecosystem is the largest in the DACH region by volume and velocity. The 687+ registered AI startups represent concentrated growth in specific hubs: Berlin leads with 209 companies that collectively raised $3.42B in 2024 (a 65% year-on-year increase), while Munich follows with 136 AI startups. Major success stories include DeepL, which has positioned itself for a potential late-2025 IPO following a $300M Series B valuation of $2B—making it Germany's most prominent generative AI company. Helsing, a defense and security AI specialist, has secured €450M in Series C funding and €600M in Series D, reaching a €3.4B valuation. Aleph Alpha, another generative AI platform founded in 2021, maintains a ~€500M valuation while competing in the large language model space.

Austrian AI Ecosystem

Austria's AI sector, though smaller than Germany's, shows strong specialization and growth. The country is home to 44 AI companies that have collectively raised €204M, with Vienna concentrating 65% of all Austrian AI startups. Key players include Mostly AI, which specializes in synthetic data generation and has become a notable player in privacy-preserving AI; Anyline, focused on optical character recognition (OCR) and document processing, which received €2.64M in FFG (Austrian Research Promotion Agency) funding; and Prewave, offering supply chain AI solutions. The Austrian AI sector benefits from strong government support through FFG funding and increasing venture capital interest in specialized AI applications.

Swiss AI and Deep Tech Leadership

Switzerland's AI startup ecosystem is characterized by strong academic spinoffs and deep tech focus. Neural Concept, an EPFL spinoff, raised $27M in Series B funding to advance physics-informed AI for product simulation. Scandit, a smartphone-based computer vision company serving 1,700+ customers in enterprise mobility and logistics, demonstrates the region's strength in practical AI applications. Swiss AI startups collectively raised CHF 345M in 2024, representing a remarkable 134% increase from the previous year. Both ETH Zurich and EPFL maintain world-leading research programs that regularly spawn AI-focused startups, with ETH launching 37 new spinoffs in 2024 alone and securing CHF 425M across 42 financing rounds.
