Unicorn Atlas — Edition 4 · Created 2026-07-31 · Last updated 2026-07-31 · Last verified 2026-07-31 · Unicorn status: Active, ascending (valued $8B, Jul 2026) · Valuation confidence: High — recent primary round, dated and attributed
In short. Quantum Systems, the Munich-based maker of autonomous reconnaissance and defence drones, is the mirror image of a fallen unicorn. Where much of the 2021 cohort has been quietly repriced downward, Quantum Systems has gone the other way: from a €1 billion valuation at its €160 million Series C (May 2025), to €3 billion at a €180 million extension (Nov 2025), to a $8 billion valuation on a $1.2 billion Series D (Jul 2026). It is the clearest DACH example of the strategic premium — a company being repriced upward because European defence and sovereignty have become a necessity, not a theme.
The 2021 unicorn was rewarded for becoming large. Quantum Systems is being rewarded for becoming indispensable.
This edition sits under Startup Scaling, Growth & Operations and extends the Unicorn Atlas from "who qualifies?" to "who still justifies the mark?" As Startuprad.io argued in Europe's Startup Recovery Was a Structural Rotation, capital is concentrating in defence, space, and strategic-necessity sectors — and Quantum Systems is that rotation made concrete. For partners who want to reach the founders, investors, and operators tracking these companies, the Unicorn Atlas is sponsorable intelligence inventory — see our B2B case studies and partner with Startuprad.io.
What Quantum Systems actually does
Quantum Systems designs and manufactures uncrewed aerial systems — reconnaissance and surveillance drones, including vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) fixed-wing aircraft that launch without a runway. Its systems are used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance by military and security customers, and it reports its aircraft have flown more than 19,000 combat missions in Ukraine. It is, in plain terms, a defence-technology manufacturer, not a software startup with a hardware demo.
How Quantum Systems makes money
Plainly: it sells drones and the software and support around them to governments and defence customers, on procurement contracts rather than consumer subscriptions. Unlike much of the 2021 unicorn cohort, it reports a real and sizeable revenue base — approximately €300 million in 2025 — with, by its own account, double-digit EBITDA margins and production across seven countries. That combination of revenue, margin, and strategic demand is exactly what the 2026 capital market is paying a premium for.

The trajectory is the story. Three rounds in roughly fourteen months took the valuation from €1 billion (May 2025) to $8 billion (Jul 2026) — an eightfold move driven not by hype but by European rearmament, the war in Ukraine, and a structural shortage of sovereign defence-manufacturing capacity. This is the opposite of the mark-to-market compression the Atlas documented across the broader unicorn cohort.
Europe's capital market has not rediscovered optimism. It has discovered necessity. Quantum Systems is what "necessity" looks like priced into a cap table.
Why this is an Atlas case, not just a funding headline
The Unicorn Atlas exists to separate what a company was priced at from what it can justify. Quantum Systems is the useful counter-example: a unicorn whose valuation is rising, backed by revenue, margin, and a strategic mandate that is unlikely to reverse soon. It anchors the top end of the same spectrum on which a repriced 2021 fintech sits at the bottom — and it makes the Atlas' central point that "unicorn" is a category containing very different economic realities.
A fallen unicorn and an ascending one can share the same label and almost nothing else. The Atlas exists to tell them apart.
What the Atlas records for Quantum Systems
For each company, the Atlas tracks: last disclosed primary valuation; funding since the peak; revenue trajectory; profitability or burn signal; strategic investors; leadership; and exit feasibility. On that scorecard Quantum Systems reads: active unicorn, ascending; valued $8 billion (Jul 2026); ~€300 million revenue (2025) with double-digit EBITDA margins; backed by strategic and financial investors including Blackstone, Airbus, and Advent; founder-led; a plausible future defence-sector IPO or strategic consolidation candidate.
A unicorn list records a moment. An atlas records movement — and Quantum Systems is moving up the board while much of the 2021 cohort moves down.
