Entity Profile
Overview
Agile Robots SE is a Munich-headquartered robotics company founded in 2018 by Peter Meusel and Zhaopeng Chen, both previously at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It combines force-torque-sensitive robot arms with computer vision and its own coordination layer, AgileCore. In September 2021 it closed a USD 220 million Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 at a valuation above USD 1 billion, making it Germany's first robotics unicorn. Since 2023 it has grown mainly by acquisition, absorbing Franka Emika, idealworks and thyssenkrupp's automation-systems business. It is DLR-attributed and is not a Technical University of Munich spin-off.
Why this entity matters
Agile Robots is the strongest available counter-argument to the claim that Europe commercialises deep-tech research badly, on three counts. First, provenance: the core technology is not a startup invention but decades of publicly funded work at the German Aerospace Center on force-controlled, torque-sensing manipulators, the lineage that produced robots operated in space, and both founders came out of the DLR institute. Second, packaging: it combined that sensing advantage with computer vision and AgileCore, a coordination layer for robots and third-party end effectors, turning a research capability into something an industrial buyer can procure. Third, financing: it crossed into unicorn territory on institutional research rather than a consumer growth curve, and was SoftBank Vision Fund 2's first intelligent-robotics investment.
Company history and product
Agile Robots was founded in Munich in 2018 by Peter Meusel and Zhaopeng Chen, who had worked at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics of the German Aerospace Center. It calls DLR its technical backbone: the institute was the first to send intelligent robots into space and among the first to develop industrially adopted force-controlled robots. It operates from headquarters in Munich and Beijing and converted from Agile Robots AG to a Societas Europaea.
Its force-controlled arms, the Diana series and later the Yu and Thor families, carry joint-torque sensing and collision detection for contact-rich precision tasks such as insertion, polishing and assembly. The Diana 7 is a seven-axis, 7 kg-payload arm with 923 mm reach and torque sensing in every joint.
A pre-A round closed in July 2019 and an eight-figure round in April 2020; the company said it raised more than USD 130 million during 2020. In September 2021 it announced a USD 220 million Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, valuing it above USD 1 billion.
Franka Emika, the Munich maker of the Panda and Research 3 cobot arms, filed for insolvency in September 2023 and was acquired in November 2023, its roughly 100 staff retained and the business renamed Franka Robotics; production restarted at Kaufbeuren on 7 March 2024, where the Franka Research 3 and the Yu 5 Industrial are built. It became a strategic investor in idealworks, the BMW Group spin-off behind the iw.hub mobile robot, in October 2023 and moved to full ownership in September 2025. In November 2025 it agreed to buy the European and North American assets of thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering, closing in April 2026; that business continues as Krause Automation and added roughly 650 people and ten locations. Chief executive Zhaopeng Chen has said revenue reached about EUR 300 million in 2025 and cumulative funding about USD 1.5 billion; these are company statements, not audited figures.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Agile Robots is both the region's most valuable robotics startup and one of its more active acquirers of German industrial-technology assets, and the largest commercial outcome to date of the German Aerospace Center's robotics transfer work. Its Munich base ties it to the Bavarian automation supply chain, and the manufacturing footprint is real: the Kaufbeuren plant in the Allgaeu builds both Franka and Agile Robots arms, and the thyssenkrupp transaction added systems-integration capacity across Europe and North America as Krause Automation. The acquisition pattern is itself a DACH story: a Munich cobot maker taken over out of insolvency, a BMW Group spin-off and a divested thyssenkrupp unit, exactly the assets German industrial groups and venture-backed hardware firms have been shedding. At the same time it is not a purely German champion: its capital base is dominated by non-European investors led by SoftBank, and it maintains a second headquarters and much of its operations in China.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Acquisitions: Franka Emika, now Franka Robotics; idealworks, the BMW Group spin-off, acquired in stages from October 2023 to September 2025; and thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering, now Krause Automation. Technology partnership: Google DeepMind.
Startuprad.io relevance
Agile Robots is the subject of the opening instalment of Startuprad.io's Meet Germany's Unicorns series and carries four tagged posts: the dedicated profile, the Industrial and Manufacturing Technology pillar guide for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and two further instalments. In the entity graph it anchors the DACH robotics and industrial-automation cluster and connects to SoftBank Vision Fund 2, the German Aerospace Center, BMW Group and thyssenkrupp. Note: earlier source pools incorrectly typed this entity as a Person. It is a company, and it is not a Technical University of Munich spin-off.
