Entity Profile

Overview

Aleph Alpha GmbH is a Heidelberg-headquartered artificial-intelligence company founded in 2019 by Jonas Andrulis and Samuel Weinbach. It began as Germany's most prominent attempt to build a domestic large-language-model laboratory and, since 2024, has been built around PhariaAI, an end-to-end sovereign AI operating system that lets enterprises and public institutions build, deploy and govern generative AI applications on infrastructure they control, using third-party and open models alongside its own. It serves public administration, defence, industry and financial services. On 24 April 2026 Cohere agreed to acquire the company; that transaction had not closed as at 14 August 2026.
Why this entity matters

Aleph Alpha is the reference case for European AI sovereignty. It matters less for the models it built than for the question it settled in public: a European company at its capital level could not sustain frontier-model competition against laboratories spending an order of magnitude more, and in 2024 it said so and changed course. That decision reframed the European argument from whether the continent can own its own foundation models to which layer of the stack it actually needs to control. Aleph Alpha's answer, the deployment, governance and compliance layer, running on European infrastructure and deliberately model-agnostic, has since become the default posture for European enterprise and public-sector buyers. Its trajectory is the most instructive evidence available on where European technological independence is achievable and where importing capability is the rational choice.
Company or institutional background

Founded in Heidelberg in 2019, Aleph Alpha built the multilingual Luminous model family. In November 2023 it announced a financing round headlined at more than USD 500 million, co-led by Bosch Ventures and the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence together with companies of the Schwarz Group, with SAP SE and Hewlett Packard Enterprise also participating. German trade press later broke that figure into a materially smaller equity investment, a larger research-funding commitment to a separate research entity, and order commitments; the announced total and the equity component are therefore different numbers. In August and September 2024 the company withdrew from frontier foundation-model competition and rebuilt its offering around PhariaAI. Leadership then changed in sequence: Reto Spörri became Co-CEO in July 2025 alongside the founder; Jonas Andrulis stepped down as chief executive in October 2025 and became Chairman of the Board; and Ilhan Scheer, previously Chief Growth Officer, took office as Co-CEO on 1 February 2026.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem

Aleph Alpha anchors the German sovereign-AI stack and the Heidelberg artificial-intelligence cluster. Its backers and customers come from the German industrial core rather than venture capital alone: Bosch, SAP, Deutsche Bank and the Schwarz Group formed their working view on domestically controlled AI through it. Multi-year framework agreements with the German Federal Employment Agency and with BWI, the IT service provider of the German armed forces, demonstrate that sovereign AI in Europe is a procurement category with budget attached. For the wider DACH ecosystem the company established both a ceiling and a template: the ceiling is the capital required to compete on models; the template is a European company competing instead on deployment, auditability and jurisdictional control.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Aleph Alpha was co-founded by Jonas Andrulis and Samuel Weinbach. Investors and strategic partners include the Schwarz Group, Bosch, SAP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Deutsche Bank and the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence in Heilbronn. Reto Spörri and Ilhan Scheer serve as Co-CEOs and Jonas Andrulis is Chairman of the Board. Cohere agreed on 24 April 2026 to acquire the company, in a structure anchored by a Schwarz Group commitment to Cohere's financing round; the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions.
