Entity Profile
Overview
Cansativa is a German wholesaler, importer, processor and distributor of medical cannabis, operated by Cansativa GmbH. It is based in Moerfelden-Walldorf in Hessen and was founded in 2017 by Jakob and Benedikt Sons with their father. It supplies pharmacies and pharmaceutical wholesalers rather than patients directly, and in 2020 was contracted by the Federal Republic of Germany to handle distribution for the cannabis agency at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, BfArM.
Why this entity matters
Cansativa is the clearest DACH example of a startup whose entire market was created by a change in statute, and of the operating consequences that follow. It built pharmaceutical-grade logistics rather than a consumer brand, which is what made it eligible for a federal distribution mandate. That mandate makes it a structurally significant node: for a period it was the single channel through which domestically cultivated medical cannabis reached German pharmacies.
Company history and product
Cansativa began wholesale operations in May 2018 in Frankfurt-Fechenheim and moved in 2019 to Moerfelden-Walldorf, where it built warehousing and a clean-room facility for the final processing and bottling of cannabis flower. Since 2022 it has run its own brands, AMICI and N!CE, and from 2023 it has exported into other European markets.
In 2020 the Federal Republic of Germany awarded Cansativa the contract for storage, logistics and distribution of cannabis cultivated in Germany under the BfArM cannabis agency. Trade reporting put the mandate at 10,400 kilograms over four years and described Cansativa as the sole distributor of German-grown medical cannabis. In February 2022 it raised a USD 15 million Series B led by the United States cannabis venture firm Casa Verde Capital, with Argonautic Ventures and the German family investment firm Alluti participating. The company reported net sales above EUR 17 million for 2023 and, in later trade interviews, revenue above EUR 65 million for 2025 and a German market share above 28 percent, all company-reported.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Cansativa sits where German pharmaceutical distribution meets a statutory framework that changed twice in seven years. Germany's medical-cannabis framework took effect in spring 2017, enabling prescription and reimbursement by statutory health insurers, and the BfArM cannabis agency was created to oversee domestic cultivation. With effect from 1 April 2024 the Cannabis Act, CanG, moved medical cannabis into a dedicated statute, the MedCanG, and replaced the earlier tender allocation for domestic cultivation with a licensing procedure administered by the agency. Those are matters of public record.
