Entity Profile

Overview

CONTENTshift is an annual accelerator programme for startups whose business models serve the content, book and publishing industry. It was launched in 2016 by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels — the German Publishers and Booksellers Association — and is today run from Stuttgart by the association's Baden-Württemberg regional branch.
Why this entity matters

Industry associations rarely operate accelerators. CONTENTshift is the German book trade's structured mechanism for letting new business models into a sector built around long-established publishers, wholesalers and bookshops, and the clearest formal route to that industry's decision-makers.
Company or institutional background

The programme started on 1 July 2016 as a three-month, EU-wide accelerator of the Börsenverein Group in Frankfurt am Main, funded by five member companies that each paid €10,000 for a jury seat. It has since moved to the Börsenverein's Baden-Württemberg regional association in Paulinenstraße 53, Stuttgart, which runs it with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism, supported by MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg and Stuttgart Media University. Coaching is provided by Prof. Dr Harald Henzler and Prof. Dr Okke Schlüter; beyond the accelerator, CONTENTshift also runs pitch events and a newsletter.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem

The programme runs on a fixed annual cycle. In the 2026 edition applications ran from 16 March to 30 April, ten shortlisted startups pitched to the jury on 16 June in Freiburg, finalists began in July, a co-creation workshop ran 15–17 September and the finale falls on 7 October. The jury consists of senior decision-makers from publishing houses, bookselling chains and specialist information providers; participants receive mentoring, business-model validation and presentation training. The winner receives €10,000, and all ten preselected startups exhibit at the THE LÄND stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair, 7–11 October 2026. Eligibility requires a content-industry business model, a solid product concept, a stable founding team and a company already or nearly incorporated. Past winners and participants include QualiFiction, Mitmalfilm, READ-O, talking hands and Immer.App.
