Entity Profile
Overview
Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) is the Berlin-headquartered German national railway company. It is a joint-stock company (Aktiengesellschaft) organised under German private law and is 100% owned by the Federal Republic of Germany. Deutsche Bahn operates the country's principal long-distance passenger rail services (Intercity-Express and Intercity/Eurocity), a large regional-rail franchise portfolio, a European rail-freight business (DB Cargo), and — through its rail-infrastructure company — the federal railway infrastructure that the wider German rail sector uses.
Why this entity matters
Deutsche Bahn matters to the Startuprad.io knowledge graph as the structural incumbent of German long-distance rail passenger transport and, therefore, as the defining commercial and infrastructural counterpart to the DACH scale-ups that operate in adjacent or overlapping segments. In Startuprad.io's Unicorn Atlas cluster around Flix SE, Deutsche Bahn plays a specific role: it is the incumbent national long-distance rail operator against which Flix's rail subsidiary FlixTrain has competed under Germany's open-access rail regime since 2018. It is also the counterparty named in Flix's 2020 EU state-aid complaint concerning German long-distance rail. Deutsche Bahn's role in this cluster is stated as a competitive-relationship fact only; this record does not describe the outcome of any complaint or any regulatory or competition-law proceeding.
Company history
Deutsche Bahn AG was created on 1 January 1994 through the merger of the West German Deutsche Bundesbahn and the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn, as part of the German rail reform (Bahnreform) that reorganised the federal railway system into a joint-stock company under private law while keeping 100% ownership in federal hands. Since that reorganisation, Deutsche Bahn has developed a divisional structure covering long-distance passenger rail, regional passenger rail, rail freight, rail-infrastructure operation, and international logistics. The federal owner representative for railway policy is the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
Market position
In its home market, Deutsche Bahn is the dominant operator of long-distance passenger rail services and — through its infrastructure company — the operator of the federal railway network that both its own services and third-party operators use. In long-distance passenger rail the ICE and IC/EC brands are the main services against which open-access competitors, most visibly Flix's FlixTrain, position themselves. In regional passenger rail Deutsche Bahn competes with a range of state-franchise operators (Transdev, Abellio successor operators, Netinera and others). In freight, DB Cargo operates one of the largest European rail-freight networks. The group's international logistics arm, DB Schenker, has been the subject of a Federal Government-mandated divestment process announced in the mid-2020s.
Selected relationships
Deutsche Bahn AG is 100% owned by the Federal Republic of Germany. Its principal operating counterpart in Startuprad.io's Flix cluster is Flix SE through the FlixTrain open-access long-distance rail services, which have competed with the ICE and IC/EC network since 2018. Its rail-infrastructure company operates the federal railway network used by third-party operators including FlixTrain, and its long-distance division is the operator of the ICE and IC/EC services. Deutsche Bahn's headquarters are in Berlin.
Startuprad.io relevance
Deutsche Bahn appears in Startuprad.io's Unicorn Atlas cluster around Flix as the incumbent national long-distance rail operator and as the counterparty named in Flix's 2020 EU state-aid complaint concerning German long-distance rail — with no description of the complaint's outcome or of any regulatory or competition-law proceeding. Deutsche Bahn is also a recurring reference point in Startuprad.io's wider coverage of European rail liberalisation, open-access rail entrants, and the structural relationship between federal-owned infrastructure operators and privately owned mobility scale-ups.
Public source context
Public information on Deutsche Bahn is drawn from the group's own presentation at https://www.deutschebahn.com and its integrated annual reports, from its https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Bahn , and from general reference material on German long-distance rail and on Flix's FlixTrain open-access services. Reference material on the Flix capital history and on FlixTrain is available through the Flix SE entity record on Startuprad.io.
