The European Central Bank was established on 1 June 1998 and is the central bank of the euro, one of the official institutions of the European Union, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. Together with the national central banks of the euro-area member states, the ECB forms the Eurosystem and conducts the single monetary policy of the euro area. Since November 2014, through the Single Supervisory Mechanism, the ECB is also the direct prudential supervisor of significant credit institutions in the participating EU member states.
