Entity Profile
Overview
Flix SE is a Munich-based mobility technology company that operates long-distance travel under the FlixBus and FlixTrain brands in Europe and the Greyhound intercity bus network in North America. Founded in 2011 and launching its first bus routes in 2013, Flix built an asset-light platform model that combines a consumer travel brand, network planning, technology and pricing with regional partners who run the vehicles. Its significance rests on scaling affordable long-distance travel across more than 40 countries and becoming one of Germany's best-known mobility unicorns.
Why this entity matters
Flix is a reference point for how a European technology company can disrupt an incumbent transport sector. By launching as Germany opened its long-distance coach market to competition, it captured the new segment quickly and then exported the model internationally, later moving into rail with FlixTrain and into the United States with the acquisition of Greyhound. Its rise from a Munich startup to a multi-billion-euro group makes it a recurring case study in platform business models, mobility, and the scaling of DACH technology companies.
Company background
Flix was founded in 2011 by André Schwämmlein, Jochen Engert and Daniel Krauss, who conceived the idea in anticipation of the deregulation of Germany's long-distance bus market. FlixBus launched its first three routes in Bavaria in February 2013. In August 2017 its subsidiary FlixTrain received a licence as a railway operator, adding long-distance rail to the portfolio. In October 2021 Flix acquired the historic US operator Greyhound Lines from FirstGroup. In April 2022 the company converted from a GmbH into a Societas Europaea and was renamed Flix SE, with André Schwämmlein continuing as chief executive officer.
Products and market
Flix operates a platform in which it owns the brand, technology, network design, pricing and customer relationship, while independent regional partners operate the buses. Its brand portfolio spans FlixBus and FlixTrain in Europe, the Turkish coach operator Kamil Koc, and Greyhound in North America. For 2023 the company reported total revenue of around 2 billion euros and about 81 million passengers travelling to more than 5,600 destinations, operating in more than 40 countries across four continents.
Funding and investors
Flix reached unicorn status in 2021 when it raised around 500 million euros at a reported valuation of about 2 billion euros. In 2022 buyout firm EQT and Kuhne Holding, the investment vehicle of logistics entrepreneur Klaus-Michael Kuhne, became long-term anchor shareholders through an investment of roughly 1 billion euros in a deal valuing the business at more than 3 billion euros. The company has repeatedly been reported as a candidate for an eventual public listing.
Selected relationships
Flix was co-founded by André Schwämmlein, Jochen Engert and Daniel Krauss. Its shareholder base includes EQT and Kuhne Holding among institutional and strategic investors. Through the 2021 transaction it became the parent of Greyhound Lines in North America.
