Entity Profile

Overview

Gorillas was a Berlin-based rapid grocery delivery company founded in 2020 that delivered supermarket goods by bicycle courier from local dark stores; it was acquired by Getir in December 2022 and the brand ceased operating in May 2024.
Why this entity matters

Gorillas was the defining company of Berlin's quick-commerce period. It passed a one-billion-dollar valuation roughly nine months after launch — reported at the time as the fastest such ascent by a German startup — and its subsequent acquisition and wind-down mark the full arc of the instant-delivery cycle in the DACH region.
Company or institutional background

Gorillas Technologies GmbH was founded in Berlin in May 2020 by Kağan Sümer and Jörg Kattner with further co-founders. It raised a USD 44 million Series A in December 2020, a USD 290 million Series B in March 2021 and a Series C of close to USD 1 billion in October 2021 at a reported valuation of USD 2.1 billion. The company operated in around 35 cities across several European countries and the United States, acquired the French competitor Frichti in 2022, and withdrew from several markets in the same year. In December 2022 it was acquired by the Istanbul-based competitor Getir in a transaction reported at about USD 1.2 billion. In April 2024 Getir announced its withdrawal from its remaining markets outside Turkey, and the Gorillas brand ceased operating in May 2024.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem

Gorillas was the largest German entrant in the instant grocery delivery segment and, together with Flink, made Berlin the European centre of the quick-commerce build-out between 2020 and 2022. Its rise and wind-down are a standing case study in unit economics for capital-intensive consumer logistics.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Gorillas competed with Flink in Germany and with the wider on-demand delivery sector represented by Delivery Hero, which also took a minority investment in the company in 2021. It was acquired by Getir in December 2022 and had itself acquired Frichti in France in 2022.
