Overview
Hans-Werner Hector is a German mathematician, enterprise-software co-founder, and science philanthropist. He co-founded SAP in 1972, led its Sales & Distribution product line and North American expansion, and has since deployed more than 450 million euros through the H.W. & J. Hector Stiftung (1995) and Hector Stiftung II (2008) into a vertically integrated STEM talent pipeline and European AI research infrastructure.

Born 17 January 1940 in Kaiserslautern, Rhineland-Palatinate (correcting a persistent English-language misattribution to Gleiwitz), Hector took his Abitur in Saarbruecken in 1959 and completed a Diplom-Mathematiker at the University of Saarland in 1966, majoring in Mathematics with Physics and Business Administration and working concurrently as a programmer at a Saarbruecken engineering firm. He joined IBM Germany in 1966 in the Applications Development division in Mannheim, where he met his future SAP co-founders. On 1 April 1972 he co-founded SAP with Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther. He owned the Sales & Distribution module from R/1 (1978) through R/3, led SAP America through its explosive US-market growth from 1988 to 1996, and left the SAP Supervisory Board in 1997.

Since 1997 Hector has architected one of the most deliberately structured philanthropic systems in German science. The four-level STEM pipeline runs from Hector Kinderakademien (ages 7 to 11; approximately 23,000 students per year across 69 Baden-Wuerttemberg locations) through the Hector Seminar (ages 11 to 18) and the Hector School of Engineering and Management at KIT to the Hector Fellow Academy (34 Hector Fellows; 200,000 euro Hector Science Prize). Hector Stiftung II endowed the KIT Hector Science Fund with 200 million euros in 2008 — the single largest documented Hector donation. Additional programmes fund a Rhine-Neckar medical-research portfolio (DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute, HITKIP, Hector Institute for Translational Brain Research), the 50 million euro Kunsthalle Mannheim Hector Bau (opened 2017; James Turrell installation), approximately 40 million euros for AI-in-life-sciences at EMBL Heidelberg (2025), and a 27.3 million euro multi-year commitment to the University of Konstanz through 2033.
