Overview
Hasso Plattner is a German engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who co-founded SAP SE on 1 April 1972 and served as Chairman of its Supervisory Board for twenty-one years, from 2003 until his retirement on 15 May 2024. He is the technical and product architect behind three of SAP's defining architectural transitions — mainframe to client-server (R/3, 1992), relational to in-memory database (SAP HANA, launched 2011), and the S/4HANA transition (2015) — and the founder of a set of institutions in Potsdam and at Stanford that carry his name.
Why this entity matters
Plattner is the most consequential European enterprise-software founder of the past half-century. SAP today runs a large share of global transactional revenue and holds a market capitalisation near €200 billion; the architectural decisions Plattner drove inside the company are directly responsible for its ability to defend that category through successive platform shifts. He is also the person most identified with the global export of design thinking as a formal methodology, following his 2005 founding donation of $35 million to the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford — widely known as the d.school. His 2013 signature of the Giving Pledge and the roughly €1 billion disbursed by the Hasso Plattner Foundation between 2016 and 2025 place him among the largest DACH philanthropists of his generation.
Career, company, or institutional background
Plattner earned his Diplom in Communications Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 1968, then joined IBM in Mannheim where he met his future SAP co-founders. In April 1972 he co-founded SAP in Weinheim after IBM's Stuttgart office declined to build a real-time enterprise processing system for Xerox. He served as Deputy Chair of SAP's Executive Board from the 1988 Frankfurt IPO, as Co-CEO alongside Henning Kagermann from 1998, and stepped down as Co-CEO on 9 May 2003 — the last of the five co-founders to leave operational management — moving immediately to the Chairmanship of the Supervisory Board. He remained the single most identifiable technical voice at SAP for the following two decades, personally driving the conception of SAP HANA at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam in late 2006 and the S/4HANA transition of 2015. In October 2020, following a single-day decline in SAP shares, he made a personal purchase of approximately €248.5 million of SAP stock that appreciated substantially through the 2024 peak.
Role in the startup, technology, investment, or innovation ecosystem
Beyond SAP, Plattner founded the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering in Potsdam in 1998, with more than €200 million committed cumulatively and an openHPI online-learning platform reaching more than one million learners. He founded Hasso Plattner Ventures in Potsdam in 2005 as a family-office venture-capital vehicle, which by 2024 had recorded 97-plus investments and 64 exits including Delivery Hero and iZettle. The Hasso Plattner Foundation, formally consolidated in 2015, disburses across education and science, art and culture, health in Africa, youth and social care, nature conservation, and climate.
Selected relationships and affiliations
The SAP founding cohort — Dietmar Hopp, Klaus Tschira, Hans-Werner Hector, and Claus Wellenreuther — remains the primary institutional cluster around Plattner. Christian Klein has served as SAP CEO since April 2020; Pekka Ala-Pietilä succeeded Plattner as Chairman of the Supervisory Board in May 2024. Plattner is majority owner of the San Jose Sharks NHL franchise, which plays at the SAP Center. He founded Museum Barberini in Potsdam (opened January 2017; permanent collection of 115 works by 23 artists, with 40 works by Claude Monet), DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam (2022, focused on East German art in dialogue with contemporary works), and co-founded the Wildenstein Plattner Institute in New York and Paris (2016). German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered the keynote at Plattner's SAP retirement gala on 15 May 2024.
