Entity Profile

Overview
Jimdo is a Hamburg website-builder and small-business software company, Jimdo GmbH, founded in 2007 by Fridtjof Detzner, Christian Springub and Matthias Henze. Its products let self-employed people and very small businesses build a website or shop without development skills, with domain, logo, SEO and analytics tooling around it. It has been profitable since 2009, took one outside investment in 2015 and bought all of it back in 2024.

Why this entity matters
Jimdo is the German counter-example to the venture template. Founded by school friends in a farmhouse near Cuxhaven, it raised roughly EUR 500,000 at the outset, turned profitable inside two years and grew for six more without outside money. When it did take growth capital — EUR 25 million from Spectrum Equity in 2015 for a minority stake — it later reversed the decision, repurchasing every external share in 2024. That matters because the German small-business software market rewards patience over blitzscaling: customers are microbusinesses, revenue per user is small, churn is structural, and the winning position is a durable low-cost product, not a land grab.

Company history and product
Springub and Detzner ran an internet agency while at school, building sites for small businesses around Cuxhaven; Henze joined in 2004 and the team built its own content management system, launched as Jimdo in 2007. An online store followed in 2010, the five millionth site in 2012 and the ten millionth in 2013. In June 2015 the American growth equity firm Spectrum Equity invested EUR 25 million for a minority holding reported at 26.7 percent. In October 2016 it cut about a quarter of its staff to refocus product development, which Henze later called the hardest decision of his time there. In 2017 it launched Dolphin, an AI-assisted builder, alongside the drag-and-drop Creator.

In 2024 Jimdo repurchased all shares held by Spectrum Equity and by Global Founders Capital, an investor of seventeen years' standing. Noerr, the law firm that advised on the buy-back and its financing, confirmed on 2 May 2024 that the three founders were again sole shareholders. Jimdo states that more than 32 million websites have been created with its tools and that it employs more than 250 people across more than fifteen countries; those are company-reported figures, not independently verified.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Jimdo sits in the German SME-software layer that Startuprad.io tracks through invoicing and bookkeeping companies: unglamorous, price-sensitive and structurally important, because it is where the long tail of German business actually digitises. Its competitive set is international — Wix, Squarespace, WordPress — making it one of very few German consumer-facing SaaS products to hold a position against US incumbents for close to two decades. German business-software vendors treat a Jimdo shop as a source system to reconcile, and FastBill lists Jimdo among its e-commerce integrations.

Selected relationships and affiliations
Founders: Fridtjof Detzner, Christian Springub and Matthias Henze, sole shareholders again since 2024, with Henze as chief executive. Investors: Spectrum Equity, 2015 to 2024; Global Founders Capital, early years to 2024; United Internet, an early backer that left the board in 2010. Adviser on the buy-back: Noerr. Ecosystem: e-commerce integration partner of FastBill — https://www.startuprad.io/entities/fastbill .

Startuprad.io relevance
Jimdo connects the small-business software cluster to the founder-turned-investor cluster in the Startuprad.io graph. Four tagged posts cover it, led by the conversation with the Jimdo co-founder who moved into green-tech venture capital and won Investor of the Year at the 2023 German Startup Awards.

Public source context
The founding story, the 2015 Spectrum Equity round, the 2016 restructuring and the product history come from TechCrunch, Wired UK, tech.eu and Wikipedia, which corroborate one another on dates. The 2024 buy-back rests on Noerr's own release of 2 May 2024, a first-party adviser account naming both exiting investors and the resulting ownership; no price was disclosed. Site counts and headcount come from Jimdo's own pages and are labelled company-reported; aggregator revenue figures were reviewed and rejected.
