Entity Profile
Overview
Mambu is a cloud-native core-banking software company, founded in Berlin in 2011 and headquartered in Amsterdam. It sells banking infrastructure as a service under a composable-banking positioning: instead of one monolithic core, customers assemble lending, deposit and account products from configurable components consumed through APIs. Its founders are Eugene Danilkis, Frederik Pfisterer and Sofia Nunes. Danilkis stepped down as chief executive in June 2023, staying a shareholder and board member; Fernando Zandona, then chief technology officer, took over, permanently from August 2023.
Why this entity matters
Mambu is the clearest German-founded example of infrastructure that is invisible to consumers and indispensable to the companies they use. Its software sits under neobanks rather than facing end customers, which is why it stayed largely unknown in German media while reaching a multi-billion valuation. Three grounds. It is a B2B SaaS unicorn founded in Berlin, where unicorns are usually consumer or marketplace businesses. Its head office is in Amsterdam, making it a working case for the European scale-up and domicile question. And it went through the full post-2021 correction — peak valuation, founder-CEO transition, cost discipline — in public.
Company history and product
Mambu was founded in 2011 by Eugene Danilkis and Frederik Pfisterer, who had built infrastructure for microfinance institutions in Latin America and Africa; Sofia Nunes is also recorded as a co-founder. First customers came mainly from emerging markets, and early backers included Commerzbank and the Berlin venture firm Point Nine. In 2016 the German neobank N26 became a customer; the banking-as-a-service provider Solaris also runs on Mambu's software, and C24 Bank launched on the platform from 2020.
In June 2021 Mambu raised close to EUR 200 million in a round led by EQT. On 9 December 2021 it announced a Series E of USD 266 million, or EUR 235 million, led by EQT Growth, at a post-money valuation of USD 5.5 billion, or EUR 4.9 billion — among the highest then attached to a European-founded B2B SaaS firm. A Wall Street Journal report just before the announcement put it at USD 5.3 billion; USD 5.5 billion is the figure in the company's own release and the trade coverage. Handelsblatt estimated contracted annual recurring revenue near USD 165 million for 2022, an estimate, not a confirmed figure. Mambu states it serves more than 280 customers and over 120 million end users, both company-reported. Since the peak, the June 2023 founder-CEO transition was followed by cost discipline; workforce-data providers report headcount falling from roughly 840 in 2023 to roughly 740 in 2024, vendor estimates Mambu has not confirmed.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Mambu sits in the supplier layer beneath several well-known DACH fintechs. Its software underpins https://www.startuprad.io/entities/n26 , a customer since 2016, and https://www.startuprad.io/entities/solaris , the Berlin banking-as-a-service provider; C24 Bank launched on it. That places Mambu at a structural chokepoint in the German fintech stack: a large share of German digital-banking front ends runs on a core supplied by a company now headquartered in the Netherlands.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Public source context
Mambu is well covered but discloses unevenly: funding and leadership events appear in company releases and the financial press, operating metrics do not. Customer and end-user counts come only from the company, revenue is a press estimate, and headcount only from third-party workforce-data vendors.
