Max Scherer

Overview
Max Scherer, in full Maximilian Scherer, is the Chief Operating Officer of Monta, the Copenhagen-headquartered software platform for electric-vehicle charging. He is Berlin-born, moved to Copenhagen in 2020, and represents Monta in its Startuprad.io interview coverage of the DACH and Nordic EV-charging ecosystem. As COO, he is responsible for the operating side of a company that raised approximately EUR 130 million within three years of founding and that, at the time of his Startuprad.io interview, had grown revenue six- to sevenfold in a single year and was hiring across Europe and the United States.

Career and background
Max Scherer was born and raised in Berlin. He studied geography at Freie Universitaet Berlin and spent a year at Dartmouth College as a Fulbright scholar. After his studies he became an operator and founder in Berlin's early Rocket Internet era, including a farm-to-table food delivery business that he built with Rocket Internet and that was later sold to a French competitor. He also worked at Boston Consulting Group. In 2020 he moved to Copenhagen for his wife's job, and, while looking for what to do next in a new city, he found Monta and joined the operating team. His publicly stated motivation is a long-running fascination with what technology can do at scale, which he applies at Monta to the software layer of the European EV-charging transition.

Role at Monta
As Chief Operating Officer, Max Scherer is the operating counterpart to Monta co-founder and Chief Executive Casper Rasmussen. Monta is deliberately hardware-agnostic: it does not manufacture charge points, but instead runs a software platform on top of thousands of different charge-point models that lets operators, businesses and cities manage EV-charging infrastructure in one system, while drivers use the Monta app to charge anywhere. Business customers pay a monthly fee per connected charge point. Scherer is the public voice for Monta's operating model, its growth trajectory and its expansion beyond Northern Europe into the DACH region and the United States. In his view that pushes hardware prices and margins down, and pushes value into a software layer that unifies fragmented hardware into one manageable network. He publicly frames this as a market-structure argument for a hardware-agnostic operating system for charging, not a bet against any specific manufacturer. He also publicly puts the global compound annual growth rate of EV charging above 35 percent and defends Monta's Series B fundraising in a difficult 2023 market on the strength of category-winning growth in a market that itself was growing against the macro trend. He is a public advocate of vehicle-to-grid services in a pragmatic, staged form: pooling charging demand so grid operators can pause charging for seconds to prevent brownouts, ahead of the heavier grid investment required for full bidirectional charging. He is also a public advocate of radical salary and equity transparency inside Monta, on the basis that shared visibility of pay, equity and the company's bank balance prevents rumour and speeds hiring at scale.
