Born 16 February 1966 in Jaerfaella, Sweden, Zennstroem completed a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Engineering Physics and Computer Science at Uppsala University, with a final year on exchange at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He joined Tele2 in 1991 under Jan Stenbeck, later managing the Danish subsidiary, and in 1997 hired Janus Friis, beginning the partnership that would produce KaZaA (2001), Joltid, Skype Technologies (2003, incorporated in Luxembourg with development in Tallinn, Estonia), Joost (2006), and Rdio (2008). eBay acquired Skype in September 2005 for $2.6 billion, and Microsoft acquired Skype from eBay in May 2011 for $8.5 billion. Zennstroem founded Atomico in London in 2006 and has served as its Founding Partner and CEO since.

Atomico now manages more than $5.5 billion across six fund generations, closing Fund VI at $1.24 billion in September 2024 — the firm's largest single raise.
