OpenMind was founded in 2024 and is based in the San Francisco Bay Area (San Francisco-based per The Robot Report, Silicon Valley-based per TechCrunch). Founder and CEO Jan Liphardt is an associate professor at Stanford University whose work spans artificial intelligence, biology and decentralised systems. The company sells no hardware. OM1 is an AI-native, hardware-agnostic operating system intended to let robots of different form factors perceive, adapt and act in human environments; Liphardt has described the design to The Robot Report as a hardware abstraction layer driven by large-language-model prompts rather than an end-to-end trained model. FABRIC, unveiled in early August 2025, is a decentralised layer through which machines verify identity, share context and collaborate securely. On 4 August 2025 OpenMind announced a USD 20 million round led by Pantera Capital, reported the same day by TechCrunch and The Robot Report, with Ribbit, Coinbase Ventures and Pebblebed among named participants. The company said the capital would fund engineering hiring and partner work across smart manufacturing, humanoids and autonomous transport. OM1 reached open-source beta on 18 September 2025, published on GitHub. The Robot Report's account of that release lists support for quadrupeds, humanoids, wheeled robots and drones; plug-and-play integration of OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek and xAI models; speech and vision through Google ASR, Riva and ElevenLabs; agents for the Unitree G1 humanoid, the Unitree Go2 quadruped, TurtleBot and a UBTech mini humanoid; real-time SLAM, lidar and Nav2 path planning; and Gazebo simulation with Docker-delivered AMD64 and ARM64 builds. The stated rationale for open-sourcing is to remove proprietary lock-in and make robot software interoperable across manufacturers. In April 2025 OpenMind announced a collaboration with DIMO Ltd., a decentralised vehicle-data protocol with more than 170,000 vehicles connected at the time, to let cars and robots exchange data, with a proof of concept expected by summer 2025.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
OpenMind is not a DACH company, and no German, Austrian or Swiss operation, subsidiary or investor is established from public sources. Its exposure is editorial rather than commercial: Startuprad.io interviewed its founder in March 2025 for a DACH and European audience, and the question the company raises — who owns the software layer of embodied AI, open or vendor-locked — bears directly on European robotics.
