Entity Profile
Overview
Point Nine is an early-stage venture capital firm headquartered in Berlin. It invests at pre-seed and seed stage in SaaS, AI and B2B software companies, writing first cheques of USD 1 to 10 million, and describes itself as based in Europe and investing globally. The firm took the Point Nine name in June 2011, when Team Europe Ventures, the investment arm of the Berlin venture studio Team Europe, was rebranded under Managing Directors Pawel Chudzinski and Christoph Janz. It is run today as an equal partnership of three partners, and its named portfolio includes Zendesk, Algolia, Contentful, Loom, Revolut and Docplanner.
Why this entity matters
Point Nine matters as a reference entity because it is one of the longest-running seed investors based in Berlin, with a public fund record that spans six funds and fifteen years. Its reported fund sizes, from EUR 40 million in 2013 to just under EUR 100 million in 2020 and a press-reported EUR 180 million in 2022, are a useful series for anyone following how seed capital in Germany has grown. Its partner Pawel Chudzinski ranked first on Forbes' Midas List Europe in 2024, and its long focus on SaaS and B2B marketplaces, now extended to AI, makes it a common first institutional investor for software founders. For founders in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Point Nine is also a reference for a Berlin firm that, according to Forbes, writes only a minority of its cheques in Germany.
Firm history and investment focus
Point Nine grew out of Team Europe, a Berlin venture studio. On 9 June 2011 TechCrunch reported that Team Europe's early-stage fund, Team Europe Ventures, was being rebranded as Point Nine Capital, with Pawel Chudzinski and serial entrepreneur and angel investor Christoph Janz as Managing Directors and Team Europe partners Lukasz Gadowski and Kolja Hebenstreit continuing as Venture Partners. The fund had by then invested in more than ten startups, including Lieferheld, MisterSpex, myGengo and SponsorPay. In February 2013 Point Nine Capital II closed at EUR 40 million to make early-stage internet investments in Europe and beyond. In June 2015 the firm announced its third fund, reported by TechCrunch as USD 60 million and by Tech.eu as EUR 55 million, for seed and Series A investments in SaaS and digital marketplaces, naming earlier investments in Zendesk, Westwing, Delivery Hero, Vend, Clio, Kreditech and Fyber. Unquote recorded a EUR 75 million fourth fund in June 2017. In September 2020 Point Nine announced its fifth fund at EUR 99,999,999, focused on B2B SaaS and B2B marketplaces in Europe and North America, and moved to an equal partnership by adding Louis Coppey and Ricardo Sequerra Amram as partners; at that point it had invested in more than 140 companies across 28 countries. Press reports in September 2022 said a sixth fund closed at EUR 180 million. Today the firm's website describes a thesis-driven early-stage firm focused on SaaS, AI and B2B software, and names Loom's acquisition by Atlassian in 2023 among its portfolio outcomes.
Role in the startup and technology landscape of Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Point Nine is part of the Berlin generation of investors that emerged from founder and venture-studio networks in the late 2000s. Its early portfolio included Berlin companies such as Delivery Hero and Mister Spex, and its partners have been regular voices on SaaS metrics and seed financing through the firm's long-running blog. Forbes reports that the firm makes relatively few investments in Germany and writes about a quarter of its cheques in North America. For software founders in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, that profile matters: Point Nine is a Berlin-based seed investor whose portfolio and co-investor network are international from the first round.
