Entity Profile

Overview

Qonto is a Paris-based finance platform for small and medium-sized enterprises, freelancers and associations, founded in 2016 by Alexandre Prot and Steve Anavi. It combines a business payment account with cards, invoicing, expense management, cash-flow tools and accounting integrations, and operates as a licensed payment institution rather than as a bank.
Why this entity matters

For a German audience the relevant point is not that Qonto is French but that it is one of the few foreign FinTech companies to have taken a serious, licensed and locally supervised position in the German SME market. Business banking for Germany's millions of small businesses and self-employed professionals was long dominated by incumbent branch networks. Qonto entered that market by buying the leading German challenger rather than by growing organically, which makes it a case study in cross-border consolidation of European SME finance.
Company or institutional background

Qonto was founded in Paris in 2016 and launched its business account service in 2017. Its legal entity carried the name Olinda SAS until 29 January 2026, when it was renamed Qonto SA. It has been authorised as a payment institution by the French Autorité de contrôle prudentiel et de résolution since 2018 under number 16958, and applied for a full banking licence in July 2025. The company now operates in eight European countries and reports more than 600,000 business customers. It acquired the Berlin SME neobank Penta in 2022 and the French accounting-automation company Regate in 2024.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem

Qonto serves Germany through the branch OLINDA Zweigniederlassung Deutschland, registered in Berlin and jointly supervised by the ACPR and Germany's BaFin. Practical consequences for German SMEs follow from that structure: German IBANs, German-language support, DATEV and Lexware Office integration, and a company-formation product for GmbH and UG entities. In the German market it competes with N26 for business customers, Holvi, Kontist and the incumbent-backed offerings, and its acquisition of Penta made it the largest dedicated SME neobank in the country.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Qonto acquired Penta in 2022 and Regate in 2024. Its investor base has included Tencent, DST Global, Tiger Global, TCV, KKR, Insight Partners, Alven and Valar Ventures.
