Entity Profile
Overview
SAP SE is a German enterprise software company headquartered in Walldorf, Baden-Württemberg. It was founded on 1 April 1972 by five former IBM employees — Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira and Hans-Werner Hector — under the name Systemanalyse Programmentwicklung. SAP builds the enterprise resource planning, finance, procurement, supply chain, human resources and customer experience software that large organisations run their operations on. It reported revenue of €36.80 billion for 2025, of which €21.02 billion was cloud revenue, and employed 111,397 people at year end.
Why this entity matters
SAP is the largest non-American software company by revenue and the anchor firm of the German technology industry. For the DACH ecosystem it works as three things at once: the benchmark against which every later German software ambition is measured, the largest domestic customer, partner and acquirer for enterprise-focused startups, and the origin of a founder generation whose capital now underwrites a large share of the region's research institutes and venture activity. No other company in the German-speaking market has produced comparable second-order effects on the startup landscape around it.
Company or institutional background
The founders' idea was standard business software that integrated a company's processes and could process data in real time, rather than the bespoke, batch-oriented systems then normal; applications for financial accounting, invoice verification and inventory management were in use by 1975. The partnership became SAP GmbH in 1981 and was restructured as SAP AG later in the decade, and since 7 July 2014 the company has been organised as a European Company. Successive product generations — R/2, R/3 from 1992, the SAP HANA in-memory database and S/4HANA — carried it through the client-server and in-memory eras, and the current phase is the migration of the revenue base to cloud subscriptions. Christian Klein has been sole chief executive since April 2020. Pekka Ala-Pietilä was elected Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the 2024 annual general meeting, succeeding Hasso Plattner, who had chaired the board since May 2003. In its second-quarter 2026 statement SAP reported current cloud backlog of €22.9 billion, up 27 percent at constant currencies.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
SAP is the gravitational centre of the Rhine-Neckar technology cluster and of German enterprise software generally. It engages startups directly through SAP.iO Foundries, a network of equity-free accelerators with locations including Berlin, and through the SAP.iO Fund, which takes early-stage positions in companies extending the SAP ecosystem. SAP was also one of the industrial participants in the November 2023 financing round for Aleph Alpha GmbH, placing it directly inside Germany's sovereign-AI question. Indirectly the founding cohort shaped the ecosystem further: the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the Dietmar Hopp Stiftung and dievini's biotech portfolio, and Hans-Werner Hector's science philanthropy all trace back to SAP equity.
Selected relationships and affiliations
SAP was co-founded by Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Claus Wellenreuther, Klaus Tschira and Hans-Werner Hector. Christian Klein leads the Executive Board; Pekka Ala-Pietilä chairs the Supervisory Board. SAP holds an investor relationship with Aleph Alpha GmbH and is listed in Frankfurt and on the New York Stock Exchange.
Startuprad.io relevance
SAP recurs across Startuprad.io coverage of DACH enterprise software, corporate venture activity and the German AI stack, including reporting on its 2023 investment in Aleph Alpha. It also sits behind much of the Rhine-Neckar founder and investor coverage, where the SAP founding cohort's foundations and family offices are among the most active backers of research and deep-tech companies.
