Entity Profile

Overview
Taxfix is a Berlin mobile-first tax-filing service for private individuals, founded in 2016 by Mathis Büchi and Lino Teuteberg and operated today by Taxfix SE. Its app guides a filer through a question-and-answer flow and files the return electronically, alongside an expert service where a certified tax adviser prepares it. In April 2022 it announced a USD 220 million Series D led by Teachers' Venture Growth, part of Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, at a valuation reported above USD 1 billion. It has since bought Steuerbot in 2023 and London-based TaxScouts in July 2024, and operates in Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.

Why this entity matters
Taxfix is the clearest German test of whether consumer tax filing can be a venture-scale business in a market where filing is not universally mandatory and tax advice is heavily regulated. It reached unicorn status in 2022, then took the same correction as the Berlin cohort, cutting about 120 roles in 2023 before resuming growth by acquisition. Its move into the UK and Spain also makes it one of few German consumer fintechs to export a country-specific regulatory product.

Company history and product
Mathis Büchi led the company until Martin Ott, previously Meta's head for Central Europe, took over as chief executive in 2021; Büchi moved to chairman and co-founder Lino Teuteberg later left operations. The core product is a guided mobile and browser tax return sold per return, with a preview of the expected refund before payment; an Expert Service was added for filers unwilling to self-serve.

Funding ran from Index Ventures, Valar Ventures, Creandum and Redalpine to the April 2022 Series D of USD 220 million led by Teachers' Venture Growth (TVG). Tech.eu, Silicon Canals and FinTech Futures all reported the round and the valuation above USD 1 billion; that valuation is investor-agreed and reported, not audited, and no later figure confirms it. In May 2023 it cut about 120 jobs, roughly 20 per cent of staff, as reported by TechCrunch and FinTech Futures; later trade reporting put headcount just over 300 against more than 500 in 2022, reported rather than company-disclosed. Growth then came by acquisition: Steuerbot, a German chatbot-based filing product, in 2023, and TaxScouts, a London accountant-assisted platform with offices in Madrid and Tallinn, announced 2 July 2024, terms undisclosed. In that release Taxfix stated more than five million returns filed, over EUR 3.5 billion in refunds and more than 400 staff; all three are company-reported.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Taxfix sits in the small group of companies commercialising German tax rules as software. That segment is unusual because the product is defined by national law and by the Steuerberater profession, which limits who may advise and makes each country a separate build; Taxfix answered by buying local firms. In the Startuprad.io graph it links the Berlin consumer-fintech cluster to the fiscalisation and accounting-technology cluster that also holds https://www.startuprad.io/entities/fastbill .
