Entity Profile
Overview
Tech.eu is an online publication covering the European technology industry. It was launched in 2013 by Robin Wauters, a former TechCrunch writer, and has been part of the Turkish tech publisher Webrazzi since October 2021. Tech.eu publishes news, interviews and research reports, offers a free Funding Explorer for European tech funding data, sends newsletters, runs the annual Tech.eu Summit and has produced the Tech.eu Podcast. In August 2021 the Tech.eu Podcast joined Startuprad.io's 24/7 internet radio station for startups and tech.
Why this entity matters
Tech.eu matters as a reference entity for three reasons. First, it is one of the longest-running English-language publications that covers European technology companies across all countries rather than one national market, alongside titles such as EU-Startups, Silicon Canals and Sifted, which TechCrunch named as its peers in 2021. Second, it combines editorial coverage with structured data products, including research reports and a free funding database, which makes it a frequently cited source on European funding rounds. Third, it is a direct media partner of Startuprad.io: its podcast archive was added to the rotation of Startuprad.io's internet radio station in 2021, which links the two outlets' audiences of founders and investors.
History and editorial output
Tech.eu launched in November 2013. In April 2014 TechCrunch reported that founder Robin Wauters, formerly of TechCrunch and European editor of The Next Web, had raised around EUR 150,000 from about 11 investors, including 500 Startups and Founder Institute founder Adeo Ressi, and that Roxanne Varza and Jon Bradford were among the co-founders; the stated aim was "news with context" based on data and research about the European tech industry. On 20 July 2015 Tech.eu launched the Tech.eu Podcast, with Neil Murray and Roxanne Varza presenting the first episode. In October 2021 TechCrunch reported that Webrazzi, Turkey's main tech startup publication, had acquired Tech.eu; the terms were not disclosed, and the combined business planned joint editorial, data and research platforms. Tech.eu's own About page confirms the acquisition and describes the publication's current output: news across sectors such as fintech, health tech, SaaS, deep tech, mobility, sustainability and artificial intelligence; reports based on its own database; the free Funding Explorer; newsletters; podcasts and videos; and the annual Tech.eu Summit. According to The Brussels Times, the first Tech.eu Summit took place on 17 May 2022 at Brussels Expo in partnership with the European Innovation Council. On 2 August 2021 Tech.eu announced that the Tech.eu Podcast had joined Startuprad.io, described as the world's first 24/7 internet radio station dedicated to startups and tech: most past interviews were added to the station's theme blocks, such as fintech, deep tech and cybersecurity, and episodes aired every Wednesday at 01:30, 07:30, 13:30 and 19:30 CEST.
Role in the startup and technology landscape of Germany, Austria and Switzerland
Tech.eu covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland as part of its Europe-wide news and funding coverage rather than through a dedicated regional edition. Its funding reports and Funding Explorer are often used to compare rounds in German, Austrian and Swiss companies with the rest of Europe. For founders in the region, it is one of the English-language outlets through which funding news reaches international investors.
