Entity Profile

Overview
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is a public research university founded in 1868 as the Polytechnische Schule Muenchen, with seven schools, around 700 professors and roughly 52,000 students, funded as a German University of Excellence. Its defining feature for the DACH ecosystem is entrepreneurship, treated as a third pillar alongside research and teaching: in 2024 more than 100 startups were founded at TUM for the first time. Most of that runs through UnternehmerTUM, a separate published Startuprad.io entity at https://www.startuprad.io/entities/unternehmertum , and the TUM Venture Labs, a joint initiative of the university and UnternehmerTUM launched in October 2020.

Why this entity matters
TUM is the clearest counter-example to the claim that German universities cannot commercialise research, and the case rests on two things. First, the measured output. The Entrepreneurial Impact Study presented in June 2025 by TUM, ETH Zurich and the University of Innsbruck traced roughly 51,000 DACH startups founded between 2014 and 2024 back to their founders' institutions and placed TUM first with 1,116, ahead of ETH Zurich (1,022) and St. Gallen (845). TUM co-authored that study, which should be stated plainly, but its lead in federal EXIST grants points the same way. Second, the mechanism rather than the league table: TUM pairs deep-tech research with a permanent commercialisation apparatus funded structurally rather than project by project, through the federal and state Excellence Strategy and the Bavarian Hightech Agenda, so a spin-off does not depend on one professor's goodwill.

Institutional history and mandate
TUM was founded in 1868 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as the Polytechnische Schule Muenchen, later Technische Hochschule Muenchen and, from 1970, Technische Universitaet Muenchen. Its mandate has remained applied and industry-facing: engineering and the natural sciences first, then medicine, life sciences, computation and management. Campuses are in Munich, Garching, Freising-Weihenstephan, Straubing and Heilbronn, plus TUM Asia in Singapore. Under the federal and state Excellence Strategy the university was confirmed as a University of Excellence for 2019 to 2026, with prize money of about EUR 105 million to implement its Agenda 2030 around the guiding idea of human-centred engineering. That agenda included replacing the traditional faculties with schools, a reform run from 2020 to 2023 that produced the present set of seven. The decision that matters most here dates from 2002, when TUM made entrepreneurship a formal third pillar through UnternehmerTUM, founded with the entrepreneur Susanne Klatten and later extended by the TUM Venture Labs, organised by technology field rather than by faculty.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
In 2024 more than 1,100 startup teams were supported by UnternehmerTUM and the TUM Venture Labs, which cover twelve domain-specific fields from quantum and semiconductors, robotics and AI and aerospace to healthcare, agro-biotech and additive manufacturing, alongside a Legal Tech Colab. TUM reports those startups raised more than EUR 2 billion of private venture capital that year and that it has secured more than 250 federal EXIST grants since 2007. The Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art funded the establishment of the TUM Venture Labs with EUR 2 million as part of the Hightech Agenda Bayern, the state programme investing some EUR 5.5 billion in key technologies. TUM is also a founding partner of the Munich Quantum Valley, launched in 2021, for which the Free State of Bavaria committed EUR 300 million under the Hightech Agenda Plus and which reports more than 200 scientists across eight research consortia. TUM reported 21 unicorns founded by graduates and researchers alongside its 2024 record announcement, including Celonis, Germany's first decacorn, and separately called Isar Aerospace, spun out of the WARR student rocket initiative in 2018, its 22nd unicorn; UnternehmerTUM also names Konux and Lilium among companies it has supported since 2002. In the Financial Times 'Europe's Leading Startup Hubs' ranking 2026, compiled with Statista across 180 hubs in 39 countries, UnternehmerTUM placed first for the third consecutive year.

Startuprad.io relevance
TUM anchors the German deep-tech commercialisation cluster in the Startuprad.io graph, and it is the university end of a pairing whose other end, UnternehmerTUM, is published separately at https://www.startuprad.io/entities/unternehmertum . Keeping the two distinct matters: much of the output attributed to TUM in public reporting is produced by the affiliated centre. Five tagged posts connect to it, covering how a global startup hub is built, Sifted's read of the German startup scene in 2024, annual startup-survey findings, and DACH news.
