Uğur Şahin is a Turkish-born German physician-oncologist and biotechnology entrepreneur who serves as co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of BioNTech SE, the Mainz-based biopharmaceutical company that developed BNT162b2 (Comirnaty) — the world's first authorized mRNA drug — in partnership with Pfizer. He has held the chair of Experimental Oncology and Immunotherapy at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since 2006 and co-founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Astellas Pharma in December 2016.

Şahin was born in İskenderun, Hatay Province, Turkey, in September 1965 and moved to Cologne, Germany, as a young child. He studied medicine at the University of Cologne, earning an MD/PhD summa cum laude in 1992 under Professor Michael Pfreundschuh, and undertook supplementary studies in mathematics at FernUniversität in Hagen. Early clinical and research work at Saarland University Hospital in Homburg was followed by a habilitation in molecular medicine and immunology and, from 2001, a move to the University Medical Center Mainz. In 2001 he co-founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals with Özlem Türeci and Christoph Huber, pioneering the CLDN18.2 (Claudin 18.2) target now marketed by Astellas as VYLOY (zolbetuximab), which received regulatory approvals in Japan, the EU and the United States in 2024. In 2008 he co-founded BioNTech SE with the same partners.
