Entity Profile

Overview

Wefox is a European insurtech group founded in 2015 that distributes insurance through brokers and other intermediaries rather than directly to consumers, with Wefox Holding AG as the Swiss holding company and its main operational base in Berlin.
Why this entity matters

Wefox was one of the fastest European fintech companies to reach a billion-dollar valuation and, at a reported USD 4.5 billion in 2022, one of the highest-valued insurtech companies in Europe. Its subsequent restructuring into an asset-light managing general agent model makes it a live case study in how a DACH insurtech resets its perimeter.
Company or institutional background

The company was founded in 2015 under the name FinanceFox by Julian Teicke, Fabian Wesemann and Dario Fazlic, starting in Switzerland, entering Germany in 2015 and Austria in 2017, the year it was renamed wefox. It reached a valuation above one billion euros in 2019, raised USD 650 million in 2021 and a USD 400 million Series D in 2022. Between 2024 and 2025 wefox completed a restructuring programme: it withdrew from the German insurance market, sold assona to the Ecclesia Group and its German brokerage activities to IWV Versicherungsservice AG, and sold its Liechtenstein carrier wefox Insurance AG together with its Italian companies to funds managed by J.C. Flowers & Co. Joachim Müller became chief executive officer in September 2024, succeeding Mark Hartigan, who continued as chairman of the board. In July 2025 the company announced EUR 151 million, comprising EUR 76 million of equity and EUR 75 million from refinancing a credit facility with Searchlight Capital Partners.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem

Wefox is one of the two best-known German-speaking insurtech companies alongside Clark and remains a principal reference for broker-led digital insurance distribution in the region. Its focus markets after the restructuring are Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Selected relationships and affiliations

Wefox competes with Clark in digital insurance distribution. Searchlight Capital Partners is a lender to the group and holds a board seat; Ecclesia Group, IWV Versicherungsservice and J.C. Flowers & Co. are counterparties to its divestments.
