BaFin was created on 1 May 2002 by the German Federal Act Establishing the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, through the integration of the former Federal Banking Supervisory Office, the Federal Insurance Supervisory Office and the Federal Securities Supervisory Office. It operates as a federal institution under public law within the responsibility of the German Federal Ministry of Finance, with headquarters in Bonn and a second office in Frankfurt am Main. It supervises credit institutions, insurance undertakings, asset managers, securities-services firms and payment institutions in Germany.
