Entity Profile

Overview
DeepL SE is a Cologne-headquartered language-artificial-intelligence company best known for DeepL Translator, launched on 28 August 2017. It grew out of Linguee, the bilingual-dictionary company established in Cologne in 2008 and 2009 by Gereon Frahling and Leonard Fink, where Jaroslaw Kutylowski led the machine-translation team from 2016. Linguee GmbH was renamed DeepL GmbH at launch; Kutylowski became chief executive in July 2019 and the company converted to a Societas Europaea in 2021. In May 2024 it raised USD 300 million at a USD 2 billion valuation in a round led by Index Ventures, and now sells a Language AI platform spanning Translator, Write, Voice, an API and DeepL Agent.

Why this entity matters
DeepL is the most useful counter-example to the thesis that Europe cannot build artificial-intelligence champions, and the case has three legs. First, it won its category on product quality: at launch in August 2017 it claimed to beat Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Amazon Translate in blind tests and BLEU scoring. Second, the advantage was structural: Linguee had spent almost a decade crawling and quality-filtering bilingual sentence pairs from company, public-authority and European Union texts, and roughly a billion of those translated sentences became DeepL's training corpus, run at launch on a five-petaflop hydro-powered supercomputer in Iceland. Third, and hardest, it converted a free consumer tool into an enterprise business, from DeepL Pro in 2018 to an agentic product line in late 2025, growing from a reported 100,000-plus organisations in more than 60 markets in 2024 to a reported base above 200,000 business customers.

Company history and product
The lineage starts with Linguee: the company was established in Cologne in December 2008 and the bilingual concordance search engine launched in 2009, founded by Gereon Frahling, a former Google research scientist, and Leonard Fink. Its web crawler collected and quality-ranked bilingual sentence pairs from company, public-authority and EU texts on the open web; that corpus became the training asset for everything that followed.

From 2016 a team led by chief technology officer Jaroslaw Kutylowski built a neural machine-translation system inside Linguee, and on 28 August 2017 it launched as DeepL Translator across seven European languages, widely reported to outperform Google Translate and Microsoft Translator.

DeepL Pro launched in March 2018 with API access, computer-assisted-translation plug-ins and a commitment that submitted text is not stored. DeepL Write entered public beta on 17 January 2023, the same month an IVP-led round valued the company at about EUR 1 billion. In May 2024 DeepL announced a USD 300 million investment led by Index Ventures at a USD 2 billion valuation, with ICONIQ Growth and Teachers' Venture Growth joining. DeepL Write Pro for business writing launched in April 2024, followed by real-time speech: DeepL Voice for Meetings with Microsoft Teams, a Zoom integration in September 2025 and a Voice API for contact centres. On 5 November 2025 it launched DeepL Agent, able to operate business applications autonomously from natural-language instructions.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
DeepL is the anchor artificial-intelligence company of the Rhineland and the most valuable startup to emerge from Cologne, a city outside the Berlin and Munich axes that dominate German startup coverage; it became Cologne's first billion-euro company in January 2023. The European argument about AI champions usually founders on the point that European firms compete where American incumbents already own distribution; DeepL is the case where a German company took a category Google, Microsoft and Amazon all occupied, won it on quality, and monetised it. The second point is sovereignty: headquartered in Germany, DeepL falls under the General Data Protection Regulation and the EU AI Act, publishes ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, holds its own encryption keys rather than leaving them with its cloud provider, and sells a data-residency option pinning processing to a chosen region, standard in its enterprise plan. For German public bodies and regulated industries that combination, not translation quality alone, is often what makes a domestic alternative procurable at all. Third, language breadth now runs to well over a hundred languages, including Luxembourgish and Irish added in January 2026, which matters for European institutions and DACH exporters in small language markets.

Selected relationships and affiliations
Chief executive: Jaroslaw Kutylowski, chief technology officer of Linguee from 2016 and chief executive since July 2019. Predecessor-company founders: Gereon Frahling, a former Google research scientist who led research at DeepL before stepping back in 2019, and Leonard Fink. Investors reported across successive rounds: Benchmark (first investment 2018), btov Partners, IVP, Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico, WiL, Index Ventures, ICONIQ Growth and Teachers' Venture Growth; Index led the May 2024 round. Startuprad.io relevance
DeepL is a recurring reference entity in Startuprad.io's European artificial-intelligence coverage, with five selected tagged posts: two pillar guides in which DeepL is the category anchor for German AI, two monthly news editions covering January 2023 and November 2025, and the Niklas Zennstroem profile, which reaches DeepL through Atomico's shareholding. In the entity graph DeepL sits in three clusters: artificial intelligence, European venture capital through Atomico and Index Ventures, and technological sovereignty.

Hedges: no equity round after May 2024 could be confirmed from two independent sources, so none is asserted; reports of preliminary discussions about a United States listing at up to USD 5 billion describe exploratory work, not a filing; and no annual-recurring-revenue estimate is stated because none could be corroborated.
