Entity Profile
Overview
Deutsche Bank AG is a Frankfurt am Main-headquartered German global universal bank founded in Berlin on 10 March 1870. It is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker DBK) with an additional listing on the New York Stock Exchange, is designated a Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) by the Financial Stability Board, and operates across four core divisions: Corporate Bank, Investment Bank, Private Bank (including the Postbank retail brand in Germany) and Asset Management (delivered through DWS). Christian Sewing has served as chief executive officer since April 2018.
Why this entity matters
Deutsche Bank matters to the DACH startup and technology ecosystem for four institutional reasons. First, as one of the two German global universal banks it is a systemic counterparty for corporate banking, cash management, foreign-exchange and payments across a large share of Germany's DAX 40 and Mittelstand base — including the corporates that acquire, license and partner with DACH scale-ups. Second, through its Corporate Bank the group delivers a dedicated Founders' Bank / Startup Banking proposition to venture-backed DACH companies, and provides transaction banking, treasury and trade-finance services to scale-ups as they internationalise. Third, through its Investment Bank the group is a routine debt-and-equity-capital-markets counterparty to German technology issuers across the IPO, follow-on and M&A cycle, and one of the German market's principal advisory houses. Fourth, through DWS the group operates one of Europe's largest asset managers, a material source of institutional capital to European equity and fixed-income markets that DACH scale-ups eventually access. The bank's ecosystem footprint also includes historical involvement in accelerator, hackathon and event partnerships with the German startup community.
Company history and product
Deutsche Bank was founded in Berlin on 10 March 1870 under Prussian statute to provide financing to German industry and international trade, and grew across the late 19th and early 20th centuries into one of the defining commercial and investment banks of continental Europe. In the postwar era the bank was reconstituted in the Federal Republic of Germany and played a central role in the financing of German industrialisation, internationalisation and the reconstruction of the corporate sector, before executing a long international expansion in commercial and investment banking through the late 20th century. In its modern form the group is organised across the Corporate Bank (transaction banking, trade finance and corporate treasury), the Investment Bank (fixed income, currencies, capital markets and advisory), the Private Bank (retail banking in Germany under the Deutsche Bank and Postbank brands, plus international private banking and wealth management) and Asset Management (delivered through the group's majority-owned listed asset manager DWS). Christian Sewing became chief executive officer in April 2018 and led the group through a multi-year strategic transformation programme centred on the Corporate Bank and on the reintegration and subsequent restructuring of the Postbank retail franchise; Alexander Wynaendts became chair of the supervisory board in May 2022.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Deutsche Bank's engagement with the DACH startup and technology ecosystem sits across several distinct channels. In its Corporate Bank the group delivers transaction banking, cash management, foreign-exchange and trade-finance services to venture-backed DACH scale-ups, and operates a dedicated Founders' Bank / Startup Banking proposition targeted at technology founders. In its Investment Bank the group provides debt and equity capital markets and M&A advisory to German and DACH technology companies through the IPO and public-market lifecycle. Through DWS the group is one of Europe's largest asset managers and a material source of institutional capital to European public markets. Historically the group has also been active in the visible ecosystem layer through participation in accelerator, hackathon and event partnerships with the German startup community, including sponsorship and partnership activity around the Frankfurt and Berlin startup scenes.
