Entity Profile

Overview
FreshBooks is a Toronto cloud accounting, invoicing and payments platform for freelancers and small businesses, founded in the early 2000s by Mike McDerment with Levi Cooperman and Joe Sawada. In August 2021 it announced USD 130 million in equity and debt financing at a reported valuation above USD 1 billion, and that October acquired the Frankfurt invoicing company FastBill. That ownership has since been unwound: in July 2024 Finance Forward reported, with confirmation from Rene Maudrich, that Maudrich and Benjamin Krischner had bought all FastBill shares back in a management buyout. FreshBooks does not own FastBill. The live Startuprad.io record for the German company is at https://www.startuprad.io/entities/fastbill .

Why this entity matters
FreshBooks is the clearest recent case of a North American software company buying its way into the German-speaking small-business market and then reversing out of it. The 2021 acquisition supplied a German product, a Frankfurt team and the DATEV interface any credible German bookkeeping tool needs; under three years later the unit had been sold back to its own managers. For DACH founders that is a reference case on what a cross-border strategic buyer is really acquiring, and how fast the thesis changes when capital markets tighten.

Company history and product
Sources date the founding to 2003 or 2004 depending on whether the product or the company is dated, so Startuprad.io reports the range. The product is cloud accounting for owner-operators rather than accounting firms: invoicing, estimates, expense capture, time tracking, payments and reconciliation. The company states more than ten million people have used it, a company-reported figure, not independently audited.

On 10 August 2021 FreshBooks announced USD 130 million in financing, reported as about USD 80.75 million of Series E equity plus roughly USD 50 million of debt, led by Accomplice, and said it valued the company above USD 1 billion, a reported figure. TechCrunch and The Globe and Mail both reported it. The FastBill acquisition followed on 7 October 2021, terms undisclosed. What followed was a retrenchment: BetaKit, The Logic and Accounting Today reported successive redundancy rounds from late 2022, the closure of a Raleigh site, and a shift back to North America and toward profitability rather than funded expansion. Chief executive Don Epperson and president Mark Girvan left in November 2023; Mara Reiff then led on an interim basis. In March 2025 FreshBooks named Shaheen Javadizadeh chief executive and announced Morgan Stanley Investment Management debt financing reported as USD 125 million.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
FreshBooks is not a German company, and its DACH relevance is the FastBill chapter. German small-business accounting software is a market foreign entrants buy into rather than build into: the tax-adviser relationship, the DATEV interface and GoBD-compliant archiving are structural requirements, not features. FastBill supplied all three, plus customers in 16 European countries and about 30 Frankfurt staff. Once FreshBooks narrowed to North America that asset became non-core and its managers bought it back.
