Entity Profile
Overview
The German Startup Association — legal name Bundesverband Deutsche Startups e.V., branded Startup-Verband in German — is the national industry and policy association of the German startup ecosystem. It was founded on 10 September 2012 in Berlin and has its office in the Haus der Bundespressekonferenz at Schiffbauerdamm 40.
Why this entity matters
The association is the principal organised counterpart to the German federal government on startup policy, and the publisher of the country's most-cited startup dataset. It is the node at which founder interests, investor interests and legislative process meet.
Company or institutional background
The association is a registered association (e.V.) under German law. It was set up by a group of eighteen startup entrepreneurs — among them Thomas Bachem, David Hanf, Erik Heinelt and Florian Nöll — in response to a legislative proposal that would have worsened the tax treatment of angel investment. Membership stands at roughly 1,200, spanning startups, business angels, venture capital investors, corporate sponsors and supporter members such as universities. It is organised nationwide through regional groups, run by an honorary executive board, and staffed by a full-time office in Berlin. Verena Pausder was elected chairwoman in December 2023; Christoph J. Stresing is managing director.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
The association's work has two arms. The first is representation: published positions on access to capital, talent and immigration, employee share ownership, public procurement and fair competition, consolidated in its Innovation Agenda 2030, together with a standing dialogue with the Bundestag and federal ministries. The second is research. The https://startupverband.de/research/deutscher-startup-monitor/ has been published annually since 2013 and is compiled with academic and corporate research partners; it is complemented by the Female Founders Monitor, the Migrant Founders Monitor and regional studies. The association also runs events including the German Startup Awards and angel pitch nights, and a member benefit programme.
Selected relationships and affiliations
Entered in the lobby register of the German Bundestag. Organised through regional groups across the federal states. The German Startup Monitor is produced with academic and corporate research partners.
