Entity Profile
Overview
Kimmo Soramäki is a Finnish economist and entrepreneur, founder and CEO of FNA, the London deep-technology company recorded at https://www.startuprad.io/entities/fna . He spent the first part of his career inside central banks — the Bank of Finland, the New York Fed, and advisory work for the Bank of England and the ECB — before founding FNA in London in 2013. He holds a doctorate in operations research and a master's in economics from Aalto University in Helsinki.
Why this entity matters
Soramäki is a Startuprad.io interview subject in his own right, not a name attached to a company record: he is the guest in a multi-part expert series on central bank digital currency and purpose-bound money, and a named guest in the 2023 DACH fintech review. He matters to the DACH graph for a second reason: he is one of the few founders whose product came directly out of central-bank research, and whose company is part-owned by a German industrial group. That makes him a usable primary source on the digital euro from the vendor side of a debate normally reported only from the institutional side.
Career
Soramäki began as an economist at the Bank of Finland, where in 1997 he built the first simulation model for interbank payment systems. In 2004, at the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, he was among the first to apply network theory to the analysis of financial systems; in a Startuprad.io interview he described that work as simulating attacks on critical infrastructure after the 11 September 2001 attacks. During the 2007-2008 crisis he advised several central banks, including the Bank of England and the European Central Bank, on modelling interconnections and systemic risk. His earlier career is also associated with the central banks of Finland and Norway.
That research programme became a company. He founded Financial Network Analytics Ltd in London in 2013 and remains its chief executive. Under his leadership FNA has built products for payment-system liquidity optimisation, supervisory intelligence, fraud detection and counter threat finance, and has worked on CBDC simulation with the Munich group Giesecke+Devrient, which invested in July 2021. He also writes and edits on network theory in finance and trains central bankers and regulators.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Soramäki is not based in the DACH region, but he is a recurring expert voice in its fintech debate. His crisis-era advisory work included https://www.startuprad.io/entities/european-central-bank , the institution whose digital-euro investigation his company's tools are built to serve; the private-token side of that argument sits with https://www.startuprad.io/entities/mica . His commercial link to the region is Giesecke+Devrient of Munich, which invested in FNA and partnered with it on CBDC modelling.
Selected relationships and affiliations
Company: founder and CEO of FNA, https://www.startuprad.io/entities/fna . Colleagues named on FNA's own site in August 2026 include Phillip Straley, president, Dr Sam Cook, chief scientist, and Dr Carlos León, director for central banks and market infrastructures. Institutional history: Bank of Finland, the New York Fed, and advisory work for the Bank of England and the ECB. FNA's investors include G+D Ventures, IQ Capital, GETTYLAB and TechFounders.
Startuprad.io relevance
Four tagged posts cover Soramäki. Two are direct interviews with him on central bank digital currency and purpose-bound money; a third is a digital-euro and stablecoin episode where the tag applies to the topic rather than to him as speaker; the fourth is the 2023 DACH fintech review, which lists him among the year's guests.
Public source context
Third-party biographical coverage of Soramäki is limited and largely derived from material he or his company supplies: speaker profiles, trade-press author pages and directory entries. His central-bank career is corroborated across FNA's site, Central Banking's training-faculty biography and independent conference programmes, but employment records are not publicly filed, so it is reported as published biography rather than documentary fact.
