Entity Profile
Overview
refurbed is a Vienna-based online marketplace for professionally refurbished consumer products, operated by refurbed GmbH. Founded in 2017 by Peter Windischhofer, Kilian Kaminski and Jurgen Riedl, it aggregates vetted refurbishment partners rather than repairing devices itself: it sets the grading standard and applies a minimum twelve-month warranty. The brand is written in lower case. As of October 2025 it traded in twelve European countries and employed almost 300 people.
Why this entity matters
refurbed is the clearest European test of whether circular-economy retail reaches genuine consumer scale. It is one of Austria's largest and most frequently cited scale-ups. It answers a trust problem rather than a supply problem: refurbed's contribution is the grading standard, the warranty and the returns process, not the repair work. It is also a useful corrective on unicorn reporting, having repeatedly been described as approaching unicorn status without any confirmed billion-euro valuation being published.
Company history and product
Independent refurbishment companies list graded devices; consumers buy from one branded storefront. The range spans smartphones, laptops and tablets as well as household appliances, e-bikes and sports accessories, described as roughly 18,000 devices at the 2023 Series C and more than 45,000 products by October 2025.
Coverage of the November 2023 round records a EUR 1.8 million seed, a EUR 13 million Series A and a EUR 47 million Series B, then a EUR 54 million Series C led by Evli Growth Partners, C4 Ventures and Speedinvest. Silicon Canals put cumulative capital raised at EUR 115.8 million; brutkasten reported the round roughly doubled the 2021 valuation, without an absolute figure. In October 2025 refurbed announced a further EUR 50 million led by Alex Zubillaga with Orilla, the investment platform of the Riberas family. Those two reported points imply cumulative funding of roughly EUR 165 million; aggregator databases publish higher dollar totals, so this is an approximation, not a confirmed total. The 2025 announcement also reported double-digit EBITDA profitability, cash-flow positivity since March 2025 and 40 percent year-on-year sales growth, all company-reported.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
refurbed sits where two Startuprad.io themes meet. The first is Austrian scale-up capacity: few Austrian companies clear the several-hundred-employee, cross-border, growth-capital threshold, and refurbed is one that does. The second is ClimateTech and the circular economy, where it is one of the few DACH entities running a consumer-facing rather than industrial model. Environmental savings it reports are modelled company figures, calculated with a methodology published with Fraunhofer Austria, not audited outcomes.
