Entity Profile

Overview
Schwarz Group, in German Schwarz Gruppe, is the Neckarsulm holding structure behind Lidl and Kaufland and the largest European retailer by revenue. Founded in 1930 by Josef Schwarz and built out by son Dieter Schwarz, https://www.startuprad.io/entities/dieter-schwarz , it is not a listed corporation and publishes no consolidated accounts. The group reported total sales of EUR 185.6 billion in fiscal 2025 after EUR 175.4 billion in 2024, and states about 604,000 employees and more than 14,500 stores in 33 countries. These are company-reported figures; with no consolidated statutory accounts they cannot be independently reconciled, and should be read as reported, not audited.

Why this entity matters
Schwarz Group is the largest privately controlled technology buyer in the German-speaking market, which is why a retail holding sits in a startup graph. Its technology arm grew out of the group's own IT needs and was opened to outside customers, giving Germany a domestically owned cloud just as European buyers began seeking alternatives to US providers. The group then became the decisive shareholder in Aleph Alpha. For founders it is one of the few German buyers able to fund deep tech at scale without foreign capital; for investors it is the sovereignty thesis financed by a family balance sheet rather than by the state.

Structure and holdings
The operating business runs through five groups of companies. Lidl Stiftung and Co. KG and LD Stiftung run the Lidl stores; Kaufland Stiftung and Co. KG runs Kaufland; Schwarz Produktion runs the group's beverage, bakery and ice-cream plants; PreZero is the waste and recycling arm; and Schwarz Digits is the technology division, whose public cloud is sold under the STACKIT brand and which owns the Israeli cyber-security company XM Cyber, acquired in 2021. That scope matters because readers conflate the arms: Lidl and Kaufland are competing food retailers inside one ownership structure, PreZero is industrial services, and Schwarz Digits sells to third parties too. Ownership sits with Schwarz Beteiligungs GmbH, controlled through Schwarz Unternehmenstreuhand KG, which holds the voting rights, and Dieter Schwarz Stiftung gGmbH, which holds almost all the capital. Gerd Chrzanowski has led the group since 2021.

Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
Three channels. First, Schwarz Digits and STACKIT as infrastructure supplier and anchor customer for European AI vendors. Second, direct investment: the companies of Schwarz Group announced an Aleph Alpha investment in November 2023 and said in 2025 they planned to increase it, buying shares once held by Bosch Ventures. Third, the Heilbronn cluster financed through the Dieter Schwarz Stiftung, including the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence and D11Z.Ventures.

Selected relationships and affiliations

In April 2026 Cohere and Aleph Alpha announced a merger, reported by CNBC, TechCrunch and Bloomberg as valuing the combined company near USD 20 billion, with Schwarz Group companies planning a USD 600 million investment in Cohere's next round; those figures are reported, and the deal remained subject to regulatory clearance.
