Startup Financing — Greater Rhine-Main Area — 2018 Full Year — Update March 2019

Executive Summary

2018 Startup financing in greater Rhine-Main — Update March

As we suggested in our first post on the 2018 venture capital numbers there was an update. We became aware of two more important data points. So we felt the need to update our 2018 Full Year Numbers, especially since we found deals worth more than 200 M US$.

Methodology

We would like to note that this post is likely a final, or almost final take on 2018. Any more updates would most likely lead to yet another upward correction of our numbers.

Let’s see why: Startups in Frankfurt announced several “seven digits” VC rounds, which are in our tracker as 1.000.000,00 € each. As soon as we get the specific amounts raised (which could range from 1,0–9,9 million) we will correct the

numbers. This correction would necessarily lead to an upward correction.

Our Updates on earlier posts

We became aware of two large data points we wanted to include. The first one being the Series A investment, which was announced very early in 2018 of Mainz-based BioNTech, worth 270 m US$ Series A.BioNTech “is Europe’s largest privately held biopharmaceutical company pioneering the development of individualized therapies for cancer and other diseases“ according to their own website. Of course, such a large transaction required an update (Link). We did not keep a close eye on biotech so far, which surely changed.Note also that BioNTech is in preparations for an IPO worth up to 800 mn US$, according to Reuters (Link), which we will also track and include.

We also became aware of the data from a regional crowdfunding data platform, which we also included. Link This still enforces the recent trend in the German market that crowdfunding fell out of favor for startup financing in 2018.

We will keep track of everything going on in the greater Rhine Main area.
