Entity Profile
Overview
COMPREDICT is a Darmstadt deep-tech company that develops Virtual Sensors for vehicles, operated by COMPREDICT GmbH. A Virtual Sensor is an algorithm, not a component: it fuses signals a vehicle already produces and outputs a quantity that would otherwise require physical hardware. Founded in 2016 as a spin-off from Technische Universitat Darmstadt, it sells to vehicle manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers and fleet operators.
Why this entity matters
COMPREDICT is a working example of what German deep tech is repeatedly said to be bad at: converting university research into a series-production supply relationship with a global manufacturer. Two features make it worth a record. It monetises data the vehicle already generates rather than new hardware, which inverts the automotive supplier cost model. And its cap table is strategic rather than purely financial, with corporate money from the connected-vehicle, tyre and carmaker sides.
Company history and product
COMPREDICT was founded in Darmstadt in 2016 with EXIST grant support from the German federal economics ministry. Public sources name Rafael Fietzek, Stephan Rinderknecht and Stephane Foulard as founders; Foulard is chief executive. Pre-seed capital came from SEK Ventures, the fund associated with the FlixBus founders, and THI Investments.
In 2022 the company closed a EUR 5.5 million Series A reported as led jointly by Vektor Partners and BlackBerry Limited, with Shift4Good participating. Michelin is named as an investor in the company's own account of its 2020 seed financing ; no independent primary confirmation of that participation was located, so it is reported as stated by the company rather than verified. In June 2024 COMPREDICT raised a USD 15 million Series B led by Woven Capital, the growth fund of Toyota, with Shift4Good continuing. In September 2024 it announced a six-year Renault Group partnership under which its tyre and brake wear virtual sensors are to reach more than 10 million Renault, Dacia and Alpine vehicles by 2030, which the company describes as its transition to Tier 1 supplier status.
Role in the DACH startup and technology ecosystem
COMPREDICT sits in the Rhine-Main deep-tech cluster and in the German automotive supply chain at the same time. Darmstadt and its technical university form one of the denser engineering-transfer nodes in Hessen, and COMPREDICT is among the more visible commercial outcomes of that transfer. Its second role is in the software-defined vehicle transition: as carmakers shift value from hardware to software, suppliers that can deliver a function without a part become strategically interesting.
